Influenza in Americus

Stories from a Pandemic

In the fall of 1918, a global influenza pandemic reached Americus, Georgia. Business halted. Schools and churches closed. Local officials called for residents to wear masks.

A century later, this website commemorates the pandemic, its victims, and the survivors.

How did people in Americus experience the pandemic of 1918?

What can micro-biographies tell us about the pandemic?

There has never been an attempt to list the victims, until now.

This project came out two Study of History classes at Georgia Southwestern State University.
